Bondage 101: Keeping Flogging Safe
There are several types of sex toys and bondage equipment out there from fleshlights to hands-free vibrators to clit clamps to ball gags, each has need for safety, whips are no exception.
In practically all BDSM play and use of bondage gear there is some risk, which is nominal if the proper precautions are taken. Before trying any new BDSM activity or using any new piece of bondage gear make sure you read all the safety warnings and learn how to keep it safe. Flogging is no exception to this rule and should be treated with respect or somebody will get hurt.
There is a term you should be familiar with and it should typically be voided. It’s “wrapping”, wrapping is what happens when you miss your target area through over extension, the flogger will wrap around the body part seriously causing the tips to increase in speed. Their contact will cause much more pain than intended and depending on the circumstances could also cause damage. Accuracy is very important in flogging and especially when using whips it can be difficult to pull off. This is why when you first start out you should practice on an inanimate object such as a pillow before moving onto a real human. Practice flogging it when it is both in a horizontal and a vertical position.
After you become familiar with the basics of flogging and want to try your hand at a human submissive you need to know what body parts are ok to strike, which are ok, but only lightly and which are completely off limits. So I will go over those various parts now.
The first parts I will go over are those that are ok to strike.
The buttocks: A very common place to strike and quite safe. As long as you keep your strikes around the central area of each cheek there is little chance for problems. There is ample protection here in the form of fat and no critical organs nearby that you need to be very concerned about. The buttocks are a great place to work if you are just beginning due to the safe aspect of the area. one thing to keep in mind is to avoid the hips, the hips are not well protected and you want to avoid bruising the hip itself, this can easily happen if you allow the tails of the whip to wrap.
The upper back: Another very common area to strike and it’s fairly safe. Due to the fact that it’s flat you don’t have to worry much about wrapping but you do need to watch out to avoid the shoulder blades and especially the spine. You should also avoid using any stiff floggers such as canes and paddles, this is because of the shoulder blades and the spine, they can be bruised or even chipped.
The thighs: Many subs love receiving work on the thighs as they tend to be more sensitive than the buttocks or the upper back. Two notable areas to work on are the inner thighs and the crease between the buttocks and the upper thighs, also sometimes known as the “sweet spot”, due to the fact that they are highly sensitive areas. This area is also popular with other bondage gear and BDSM toys for many people. However due to the shape of the thighs they are prone to wrapping if your strikes are not on target and a wrap that ends on the inner thigh, which is already sensitive, can cause quite an uncomfortable amount of pain.
Here is a list of regions on the body that should never be struck with any type of flogger:
Spine
Lower back
Head
Neck
Feet (however the soles are sometimes used but be very careful as the bones there are fragile)
All joints, period.
Shoulders
Upper chest
Lower check
Abdomen
Tailbone
The rest of the body not covered in either of the above two sections are ok to strike if done with great care. One notable area are the breasts. Many women love their breasts to be worked on by various types of bondage gear, but extra care must be taken when using flogging devices as the breasts are very sensitive and can easily be damaged if struck too hard. But luckily since the nipples and areola are so sensitive heavy strikes are unnecessary.
Always use common sense and follow safe habits, listen to what experienced BDSM practitioners say and only work on a human being when you’ve sufficiently practiced on inanimate objects.
