Watching bonsai trees develop and shaping them into amazing sculptures is an absorbing and extremely rewarding pastime. Growing bonsai isn’t an expensive pastime with only a few tools required, but a fine bonsai tree can be more of a statement in your home than many ornaments can. A bonsai is a living sculpture.

Bonsai Trees are pot planted trees that are developed to be a miniature of of its full sized tree. Bonsai can be grown from nearly any perennial woody stemmed trees and shrubs that produce branches and can grow in miniature through pot confinement with the help from crown and root trimming.

Bonsai trees can be grown from seeds, from young shoots lifted from the wild, (please have regard for any laws in respect of taking wild plants or trees in your area), or can be bought as mature planted bonsai. Obviously growing bonsai trees from seed is the slowest method, but you will then have total control over how your bonsai will look.

Bonsai trees are planted in containers that not only restrict root development, but also further enhance the beauty of your bonsai tree. Specialist soils can be bought that provide the perfect conditions for your bonsai to grow in.

Many methods are employed to shape and give unique character to your bonsai including trimming leaves, wiring branches, grafting, short term dwarfing and deadwood, (a process used to age the bark). Few specialist tools are required to sculpt bonsai trees, and these are readily available very cheaply. Everything you require to start growing bonsai can easily be bought from a specialist bonsai nursery.

Bonsai are available as both indoor and outdoor varieties, and some bonsai trees are best if they are left outdoors in the summer months and grown inside during the winter.

For anyone that likes the idea, but does not want to keep bonsai, you can purchase artificial bonsai.

If you are considering if developing bonsai is for you, I say have a go, bonsai trees are simple to grow and maintain, take very little of your time, every bonsai tree is individual, and who doesn’t admire a bonsai tree whenever they see one.
