School And Education? Who Needs Them?
We have been told year after year that an education is important. Is it really? Do you know why? At our math comic strips web site we deal with this question quite a bit. In this article we will be focusing on why it’s important for our children to get a good education.
To start off, a great education equips you with power. When you graduate from school, progressing through elementary school, middle school, high school, college and university, etc., the education that they provide gives you power over your future. It’s true that you can get “on the job” training for some jobs, but they are getting rarer as time goes on. Many employers won’t even consider you if you don’t have the minimum educational requirements.
A good education makes you a more resourceful human being. Nobody is so smart that they know everything about everything, but a good education gives you a foundation of solid principles that you will be able to apply to any situation you might encounter. Let’s illustrate with an example. Suppose someone asks you what time it is? Suppose you have forgotten your own personal watch? If you have knowledge on how to tell time, you will be able to utilize this capability with any watch or clock that happens to be around you at the time. Yes, this is a very basic and trivial example, but it illustrated the point quite well.
A greater quality of life often comes hand-in-hand with a well-rounded education. When the economy starts to turn down, people get laid off, and it’s often those who lack education who get laid off first. It’s hard to keep up your quality of life when you have no job. Even worse, people who lack in education often have a harder time finding a new job.
Understanding often goes “hand-in-hand” with a great education. Suppose you are on a trip to Europe, France to be more specific. You may never have been to France before, but by educating yourself and studying about this country while at home, you will have a deeper understanding of France, and the French, before you even set foot in Europe.
“Birds of a feather flock together”, or so the saying goes. Have you ever heard the term “networking”, in a social setting that is? It basically means meeting people to serve a common goal. Networking often goes hand-in-hand with a good education, as it means you will be able to “flock” with other “birds” who share your goals and ideals. Who knows what jobs might come out of these encounters?
Aren’t people with a good education more fun to be around? They seem to have knowledge on almost any subject, and can keep a conversation rolling along. Armed with a good education, if someone happens to bring up an obscure topic at the dinner table, you will be able to join in and give your opinion. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to educate others and make new acquaintances and friends in this way? I think so…
