2007 Audi R8

The United States and Europe got its first taste of the brand new Audi mid-engine designed model R8. The high revving V8 equipped with a powerful 420 horse power dominates as you turn her over. There is a special thrill to an Audi that is uniquely hers. While not the same heart stopping thrill that accompanies slipping behind the wheel of a super car, she has Audi appeal through and through.

Featuring all wheel drive, she was handsomely designed from the Lamborghini Gallardo platform. Offering BMW and Porsche direct and confrontational competition, she is priced between $80,000 and $110,000. The owner has the option between significant LED headlamps or the direct and serious Xenon headlamps with the alternative lights proffered in LED. The hood lamp even directly lights up the engine bay quite distinctly even at night with its LED feature, but this is an Audi, right?

There is ample discrepancy over the 0 to 60 miles per hour time, and the conservative number falls in at a mere 4.6 seconds. The optional standard transmission or the automated manual transmission came attached to the impressive V8. Audi has definitely come a long way since its United States debut in the eighties. The R8 has class and style written all over her, hiding her ferocious beast under the hood.

The interior has been restyled, a seductive yet sporty design includes standard leather trimmed or full leather seats. Alternatively the optional bucket seats are constructed to hug the body, if preferred. The cockpit has been completely oriented for driver usability and functionality, while still proffering passenger style and luxury. The driver has everything he or she desires right at their fingertips, cleverly situated between the dashboard and the center console. The signature flat bottomed Audi steering wheel that Audi fashions its sportier models with claims the R8. This design isn’t meant to be particularly flashy, it is actually a clever design that allows for easier exit and entrance concerning sport models.

Comfort for two people is well above that of the normal room delivered in most sports cars. There is some storage behind the seats, enough for perhaps two sets of golf clubs, while the front storage compartment hold somewhere around 100 litres. The interior can be uniquely polished off as nearly custom with tremendous variants of the optional trims available.

The 4.2 litre engine, situated of course comfortably in the rear of the vehicle, delivers a beautiful 420 horse power. No less than an impressive 90% of its maximum torque is consistently maintained regardless of variable engine speed. Naturally that means that the 8 cylinders are chronically delivering maximum thrust in nearly any driving situation. The high revving quality of the engine not only adds the liveliness of race car sound, but it enhances engine agility as well. The Audi R8 delivers superior output of power at the higher engine speeds while exhibiting a smooth and eager responsiveness at all RPMs.

The dry sump lubrication, which is yet another race car inspired enhancement, launches an ideal lateral and longitudinal acceleration. The engine is consequently installed lower which of course lowers the center of gravity. The lowered center of gravity dramatically enhances handling and driving performance.

The standard all wheel drive system distributes variable power throughout the wheels via a viscous clutch. Like all Audis, the variable Quattro system has been modified and adapted to the axel load of mid engine cars.

Whether you opt for the standard transmission or the Audi R tronic sequential shift gearbox, power and performance are the name of the game. Each delivers excellent acceleration and enhances the driving experience ten fold. Audi cleverly mounted the joystick gear shift on the center console and then mounted the paddles on the steering wheel, making their sequential shift system remarkably user friendly. Audi maximized the shift by wire concept to create phenomenal power to weight ratio while still offering lightening fast gear shifting. The Sport Mode maximizes driving fun and pleasure while enhancing the feeling of performance while the automatic mode provides the driver with the convenience of automatic ease.

The forged aluminum double wishbones featured on the chassis spread throughout the front and rear. The front triangulates while the rear features the top wishbone triangulated with the bottom one triangulated with a track rod. This feature maximizes wheel control, agility and steering precision. All of these features are dramatically enhanced by the feedback the driver receives from the direct hydraulic rack and pinion steering.

The stiff spring and damper set up allows for a remarkably high level of driving comfort while improving driving dynamics. The Audi magnetic ride adaptive damper system is heads above the traditional gas filled shock absorbers. Audi has thus effectively enhanced its comfort ride system beyond most expectations.

The standard 18 inch wheels can be optionally upgraded to the 19 inch wheels. Semi-effectively mimicking rims, the 6 arm wheel are outfitted in 253/40 tires for the front while the rear is encased in 285/35 tires.

Details such as the acoustic parking system and the on board navigational system, not to mention the microphone based vehicle compensation system to deliver the highest quality of sound form the twelve speaker surround sound from the Bang and Olufsen stereo/CD system, create a vehicle designed for maximum in everything from speed to comfort.

The R8 is built on a small lot production line, while the specialist team filters behind thoroughly inspecting every piece and part that goes into the Audi R8. Producing the exceptional quality that surpasses even typical Audi standards has been the goal, which has been beautifully achieved. While the production is created in more of a workshop atmosphere, and production is limited to fifteen cars per day, Audi expects the R8 to hit the public eye with intense interest.

Naturally public opinion denotes that the Audi R8 has surpassed the typical Audi standard. While Audi has always had a devoted following, the release of the Audi R8 has drawn attention from those who never considered Audi to be competitive with the higher class performance cars on the road today.
